What is it about?
N-mono-alkylation and N,N-hetero-dialkylation are both possible under ambient photocatalytic conditions using alcohols as alkylating agents! Heterogeneous mixed-metal-loaded semiconductor photocatalysis does not mandate the formation of (metal) salt waste byproducts!

Why is it important?
CH3OH and other alcohols are sustainable carbon resources, available by reduction of renewable resources including carboxylic acid derivatives. The reaction rate of this N-alkylation using alcohols is very rapid, not mandating the formation of salt wastes, easily to purify the N-methylation products, the last stage N-methylation of pharmaceuticals are also possible, and thus has potential for application in positron emission tomography (incorporation of C[11] whose half life-time is ca. 20 min), in which C[11]H3OH should be used.
