What is it about?

Stem cell therapy requires specific biomarkers to avoid contaminations with other cell types able to negatively influence their therapeutic efficacy. Moreover, a correct definition of SC metabolites may be exploited for specific biomarker identification. We used a sophisticated analysis of cell metabolites based on Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) to enhance the subtle, yet specific differences, able to characterize brain Stem Cells

Why is it important?

For the very first time we have demonstrated here that the metabolite content inside each brain SC is specific, thus determining its selective characterization. Metabolic peculiarities in brain SCs at different ages correlate to their function, are very precocious and are maintained in culture, even after isolation from the original tissue. Metabolites have a primary role in SC proliferation and neural regeneration, so their optimal preservation is reflected on the correct function and performances of the whole organism. Defining the correct metabolic composition of brain SCS is fundamental for defining and matching the pathological changes due to ageing and/or neurodegenerative diseases. Moreover, the brain SC signature will produce a main clinical impact on both basic research and the creation of novel drugs/therapeutic approaches.

Perspectives

This NMR study of metabolites inside brain SCs opens novel therapeutic perspectives to better exploit the SC healing properties able to contrast ageing and degeneration processes.
