What is it about?

This work used genotyping by sequencing to characterize the diversity of landraces of chickpea held in the Russian Genebank, the Vavilov Institute for Research. The analysis shows variation based on where and when the landraces were collected. By characterizing the landraces in the field, we show that one chromosome has genes for a number of important traits.

Why is it important?

Genebanks are critical resources for protecting crop diversity. As the first systematically assembled genebank, the VIR's collections are of particular global importance for under-utilized crops like chickpea.

Perspectives

Protecting crop diversity is among the most important tasks we face with the spectre of climate change.
