What is it about?
Some physicians are reluctant to offer ECMO to infants with neonatal encephalopathy because of concerns about neurologic injury or other complications. This study shows that ECMO providers, especially neonatologists, are more willing to provide ECMO than they were in 2008.

Why is it important?
ECMO use is growing for neonates with HIE, but practice is still variable. Neonatologists are more likely to offer ECMO to patients with HIE than non-neonatologists. Beliefs about complications are varied and may not be supported by published literature. Additional research is needed to identify the best use of ECMO for HIE.
