Survey of NICU mothers' access to electronic communication technology and their interest in using that technology to communicate with the NICU team.

Why is it important?
We show that the majority of NICU mothers have smartphones and are interested in using the messaging features to communicate with the NICU team. The mothers believe this technology can enhance communication, improve their understanding of their baby's illness, and help them care for the baby after discharge.
Perspectives
Today's NICU mothers feel comfortable communicating via smartphone. Text messaging and social media apps are extremely popular, even in this poor community. The medical community needs to develop HIPAA-compliant tools to communicate with and educate NICU mothers so they feel more comfortable with their high-risk infant and can better care for their babies after discharge.
