What is it about?

Radiocarbon dates obtained directly from prehistoric paintings at three key-sites located in tN Spain (Altamira and Castillo) and French Pyrenees (Niaux and Lascaux). Several samples have been collected in different paintings to analyze the anatomical structure of the charcoal content. This has enabled us to identify the type of wood used to paint before in each sample before its dating

Why is it important?

This way allow to know the exact date of these paintings and not their approximate date based on their style or by dating the associated remains left by humans

Perspectives

This first study has brought new interventions in other sites with rock paintings
