What is it about?

Individuals with addictions may view their addiction as a product of a disease, a moral issue, a psychological issue, a sociological issue or a natural issue. We were interested in seeing how these beliefs impact how individuals stigmatize themself for their addiction.

Why is it important?

Decreasing an individual's stigma on themself may increase their likelihood of seeking treatment and may increase their chances of treatment being successful.

Perspectives

I hope this article makes an impact on how we can approach the stigmatization of addictive disorders. Stigma is an extremely difficult construct to disentangle and by understanding the small ways in which we can break its complex structure, we can hopefully make a great impact on those living with addictions.
