Our study confirms the importance of examining different visuospatial processes in individuals with Autism spectrum disorder. The results suggest that the preference for focusing on visuospatial details typical of individuals with autism spectrum disorders may be a domain-specific mechanism rather than a general characteristic of their cognitive profile.

Why is it important?
Our findings showed that individuals with Autism spectrum disorder can have different performances in visuospatial tasks in which they are required to reconstruct a visuospatial i.mage or to recall a visuospatial image. In particular, a preference for focusing on visuospatial details only emerged in visuospatial tasks requiring fine motor skills.
