What is it about?

Surrogate analysis is demonstrated to be able to differentiate synchronous from non-synchronous systems in psychological studies of paired interactions. An example analysis is given on real data and the hypotheses tested by this method are laid out in plain English.

Why is it important?

Standard methods for testing synchrony may show synchrony even when no synchrony exists. This method fixes that problem by testing if observed synchrony values are due to true synchrony or random chance.
