What is it about?

Using a social network approach, this study examines the association between negative relationships and well-being among Latinxs. Similar to positive relationships, negative relationships have network characteristics that are relevant to a person's psychological health, which the current study explores.

Why is it important?

The current study uses the convoy model of social relationships to understand the impact of negative relationships on Latinxs well-being. The network influences of negative relationships, particularly involving acculturation and Latinxs, are not well represented in the literature. The current study fills a critical gap in understanding those factors relative to their well-being and posits that the sum of negative relationships is greater than its individual parts.

Perspectives

I think people have overlooked the impact of negative relationships and their influences on stress and exposure to determinants that adversely influence people's physical and mental health. The COVID-19 pandemic has emphasized the importance of connectivity and I believe that future research must consider a person's social context (i.e., who people are connected to) to fully understand people's well-being and psychological health.
