What is it about?

This paper comments on a research article focused on how self-compassion can buffer against the discrimination faced by sexual and gender minorities. It suggests that this cognitive strategy may be needed as multiple branches of government look at reversing LGBTQ rights.

Why is it important?

The U.S. Supreme Court and many U.S. states have already reversed civil rights in many areas. These efforts will continue for the foreseeable future. Thus, psychologists will need to consider strategies to offer their clients to buffer against the negative effect of this discrimination.

Perspectives

Although overtly political commentaries may seem unusual for a clinical/psychological science journal, the reality is that the recent action by the different branches of U.S. government at the federal and state level are having a major psychological impact on the nation's well-being. I hope that this commentary helps further heighten the attention that is given to how the real and threatened whittling of civil rights is harming people's mental health.
