What is it about?

We examined how specific eating motives of hedonic appetite, palatable eating motives, and controlled dietary motivations interact with emotional eating and impulsivity in relation to calorie intake and binge eating in adolescents. There was a significant interaction of controlled dietary motivation and emotional eating predicting binge eating. Hedonic appetite and palatable eating motives were also significantly associated with binge eating.

Why is it important?

Our findings highlight that hedonic appetite and emotional eating may be risk factors for binge eating in a community sample of adolescents, and may be important to assess and address from a preventive framework.

Perspectives

Screening for hedonic appetite, emotional eating, and other eating motives can inform preventive strategies for disordered eating. Interventions that promote healthful relationships with food can be preventive to the development of disordered eating and related concerns for adolescents.
