What is it about?

This is a meta-analysis and systematic review of over 40 years of research on retrieval practice (i.e, test-enhanced learning; the testing effect) and transfer of learning (i.e., generalization of learning from one context to another). The review encompasses the use of retrieval practice and transfer across test formats, to different cue-target combinations, to related text materials, application and inference questions, problem-solving scenarios, and other types.

Why is it important?

Transfer of learning is the "holy grail" of education. Retrieval practice is one of the most potent evidence-based learning techniques uncovered to date. This review provides the most comprehensive examination of the intersection of both.

Perspectives

If you are an instructor or researcher that is interested in retrieval practice and transfer, this review is for you.
