What is it about?

People grow, change, and are transformed by the intensely personal experience of psychotherapy, counseling, and career counseling. This chapter is a philosophical exploration of the commonalities of these three psychological interventions. While there differences in theories and practices, these three interventions have much in common when it comes to the transformation of a person who seeks change.

Why is it important?

Debates rage about the definitions of psychotherapy, counseling, and career counseling. This chapter cuts through the debate, settles some old disputes, and raises more questions.

Perspectives

Writing this paper was important to me because I have encountered and endured fellow practitioners' attitudes and approaches to practice dismiss the transformative capacity of career counseling. Their misunderstandings relegate career counseling, yet the history of counseling itself is embedded in vocational psychology.
