What is it about?
This paper is an early test of a key proposition of appraisal theory, namely that different emotions are associated with distinctive patterns of appraisals (cognitive evaluations). The appraisal antecedents of 15 emotions are explored, and a model in which these appraisals can be described in terms of 6 distinct dimensions is presented.

Why is it important?
This is one of the very first studies to document the role of appraisal in differentiating emotional experience. It provided early key data that provided momentum to the development of appraisal theory.
