What is it about?

We leverage mathematical models of capacity and multitasking throughput to develop a novel, unobtrusive estimate of team multitasking throughput (tMT). In a human-subjects experiment, we quantified how objective performance and purported reliability dynamically affected team efficiency while completing collaborative tasks.

Why is it important?

Our findings evidence the utility of our novel metric to capture team performance. In conclusion, we quantified how objective performance and purported reliability dynamically affect team efficiency while completing collaborative tasks. We found there was a marked difference in tMT between those with low and high purported reliability, but this difference was dependent on whether the teammate’s performance matched expectations.

Perspectives

Writing this article was a great pleasure as it has co-authors with whom I have had long standing collaborations. It brings together applied mathematical psychology and constructs of social dynamics in humans to capture team level constructs and performance.
