What is it about?

This publication discusses considerations for implementing early psychosis care in the rural United States. Most research about early psychosis is focused in urban areas; the models of service delivery were developed in urban areas. We discuss different considerations for building early psychosis services in rural areas, including community-driven approaches and culture.

Why is it important?

Individuals in rural areas of the United States are less likely to have access to specialized services for early psychosis. It is important to ensure that rurally situated individuals with psychosis can have access to recovery-oriented, evidence-based supports.

Perspectives

As an early psychosis provider and researcher who has focused on work with underserved and rural populations, I believe it is crucial to carefully consider how early psychosis services can be effectively developed in rural communities. Although telehealth is often proposed as the solution, research has also shown that rapid implementation of telehealth can exacerbate disparities. We must think carefully and critically about rural implementation to ensure that we do not unintentionally exacerbate disparities.
