What is it about?

In this study our main objective was to map out a personality model in the Swahili language, a major Bantu language spoken in East and Central Africa. This model would then be used as the foundation to construct an indigenous personality test that would be used in various settings such as Human Resource settings, Courts and Correctional settings, Clinical settings etc.

Why is it important?

Swahili is a major language is Africa spoken by modern 200 million either as a first language or second, and this the first psycho-lexical study to focus on that language. For long psychologists in East and Central have relied on borrowed personality tests from either Europe of the US, and this study sets the foundation to develop the first ever indigenous personality test; a test that is sensitive to the cultural experiences of this region

Perspectives

The findings of this study will inform a new perspective on human personality. It will form the basis for personality researchers to re-look afresh at the personality models that have so far been considered of universal application.
