What is it about?

We reexamined the fundamental finding that having highly accessible attitudes eases decision making in a diverse and culturally inclusive set of samples and contexts. The findings show that making attitudes more top-of-mind 1) led to faster decisions almost all of the time, 2) led to choices that matched one's attitudes when there was no need to accommodate others' specific preferences, but 3) did not lead to choices that matched one's attitudes when there was a need to accommodate others' specific preferences.

Why is it important?

By conducting a more culturally (and socially) inclusive look at the robustness of one of social psychology's fundamental effects, we replicate past findings and provide a step in the direction of understanding the strategies people may use to manage their top-of-mind attitudes when making decisions that impact others.

Perspectives

Writing this article was the ultimate demonstration of grit, patience, and perseverance through adversity. I hope future scholars see this work as evidence of what can be achieved through perseverance and strong social support.
