What is it about?

We use body camera footage to look at how police officers' tone of voice when interacting with Black and White men. Participants responded that officers' tone communicated more respect and friendliness towards White drivers, even as we masked the race of the driver and the content of the officers' speech. Exposing community members to Black-directed (vs. White-directed) speech reduced institutional trust in law enforcement and led to more negative representations of the police.
