What is it about?
Problematic social media use (PSMU) is a potential behavioral addiction and public health issue. Our results showed that fear of missing out (FoMO) could directly increase the risk of PSMU and indirectly increase it through social media self-control failure.

Why is it important?
PSMU is an uncontrollable usage of social media, which has negative impacts on mental health and sleep problems, even increases the risk of self-harm and suicide. We have shown for the first time to examining a causal relationship between FoMO, social media self-control failure, and PSMU. We also extend the examination of trait-FoMO, state-FoMO, social media self-control failure, and PSMU to between-person effects (at a given point in time) and within-person effects (across different points in time).
Perspectives
Writing this article was a great pleasure as it has co-authors with whom I have had long standing collaborations. I hope this article could be a good starting point in understanding and preventing problematic social media use for mental health practitioners, researchers, and the general public.
