What is it about?

Minority stress refers to specific stressors that sexual and gender minority people experience. Does minority stress differ across social and political contexts? The paper addresses such question in a comparative perspective of Italian and Spanish gay and lesbian youth.

Why is it important?

Thanks to the comparative perspective of the paper, our findings can inform policy makers about the impact of social and political context on gay and lesbian youth's stress and mental health. They can also inform other people (e.g., therapists, school principals, religious leaders, etc.) about the specific needs of this population.

Perspectives

In working on this study I realized how important it is to examine minority stress and the influence of social and political forces on people's experiences and mental health. I really hope that research on these topics will lead to actual changes.
