What is it about?

We use data from 13 UK organizations to evaluate the effectiveness of the mentlal health awareness training (MHAT), a 3-hour long, evidence-based line managerial training. We show that this training is effective, but that the effectiveness depends on characteristics of trainees and organizations, namely leaders' learning goal orientation and organization's climate of mental health openness.

Why is it important?

Line managers can be trained in a relatively short time to be more knowledgeable in mental health and mental health resources and feel more confident and empowered to provide such support to their staff. However, such training is likely to reap the largest benefits in organizations where employees feel safe to talk about mental health without expecting adverse consequences (i.e., climate of mental health openness).

Perspectives

It is essential to consider the role of context in line managerial mental health training effectiveness. As such, policies, practices and the organizational culture need to be supportive of mental health.
