What is it about?
The impact that therapists have on the treatment outcomes of their clients is known as therapist effects and this accounts for some of the variability in the effectiveness of therapy. The Facilitative Interpersonal Skills (FIS) performance task and rating method provides a unique way of measuring certain skill characteristics related to therapist effects providing a metric for observing therapist quality. This study reviews all of the studies utilizing the FIS performance task and rating method to determine the quality of the measure, solidify the link between FIS and therapy outcomes, evaluate its connection to the process of therapy, and explore its potential effectiveness in training therapists.

Why is it important?
The cumulative findings show that FIS is both a quality measure and is related to clients getting better in therapy. Adding to this, there is potential for its use in training therapists. This review lays a path for additional strategies for improving therapist expertise via FIS ultimately improving treatment for clients entering psychotherapy.
