What is it about?

Many studies examining relationships satisfaction/distress in military couples look only at personnel mental health. The study shows high levels of relationship distress amongst UK military couples and highlights the role of mental health of military partners in couple relationship satisfaction. Partners of personnel of lower rank and those with increased posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms may be more at risk of lower relationship satisfaction.

Why is it important?

Few studies look at the relationship satisfaction of both military couple members. This study finds that UK military partner posttraumatic stress disorder, rather than that of personnel, may be important to think about for this group. The findings show that more research should look at both couple member outcomes to better understand military couple well-being and relationship health.

Perspectives

The study provides important insight into relationship, satisfaction and distress among UK military couples. In particular, it highlights the importance of looking at mental health among both couple members when looking at relationship outcomes.
