What is it about?

A model is introduced with initial evidence to explain how undocumented college students develop critical consciousness in response to discrimination, and how this is associated with greater agency and outcome expectations to change discrimination.

Why is it important?

The discriminatory, unwelcoming, and culturally hostile climate toward undocumented students in higher education institutions and society activate cultural stress that is experienced as psychological distress symptoms. By understanding how undocumented students respond to this hostility, clinicians and educators can help promote their empowerment and mental health.

Perspectives

I hope that this article will be helpful to increasing the understanding about how undocumented students cope with hostility, and how they can be better supported. This topic is particularly meaningful to me as someone who was undocumented while in college, and who would like to see undocumented students being better supported in higher education and society.
