What is it about?

This research demonstrated that social-level factors such as experiences of discrimination are detrimental for the well-being of immigrant descent parents, whereas experiences of positive contact with people from the non-immigrant majority society was beneficial for the life satisfaction and the self-beliefs of immigrant descent parents about their ability to successfully influence their children’s development.

Why is it important?

Previous research has shown that there are persistent differences in life satisfaction of people of immigrant descent relative to the majority, non-immigrant society in Europe, and that this can be explained by multiple individual- and social-level factors. Our findings highlight the importance of majority, non-immigrant societies fostering conditions and policies that promote opportunities for harmonious interactions between immigrant/immigrant descendants and majority, non-immigrant populations.
