What is it about?

This paper reviews the literature on identity conflict at work. Based on the existing literature, we develop a theoretical model that suggests that identity conflict is a type of identity threat and can be understood as the result of a cognitive appraisal process. We also explore the outcomes of identity conflict and the ways in which individuals at work seek to address identity conflict.

Why is it important?

Our review reconceptualizes identity conflict as a form of threat using an appraisal lens. We also clarify the relationship between identity conflict and other related concepts such as role conflict, work-family conflict, identity tensions and identity strain. Finally, we set an agenda for future research in this field.
