What is it about?

Formerly depressed patients often fail to recognize when their depressive symptoms are returning. We showed that early signs of depression could be relatively accurately and timely detected by assessing thoughts and feelings on a smartphone for four months. Increases in worry, negative thoughts about the self, stress, irritation, and restlessness where detected at least a month before recurrence in a substantial number of the participants.

Why is it important?

The developed ‘depression barometer’ may be used in the future to alert individual patients of early signs of depression and thereby aid prevention of recurrence of depression.

Perspectives

This is my first study with findings that I believe would be worthwile to use in clinical practice. I hope that, using the findings, an instrument can be developed for formerly depressed individuals that can alert them in time when their symptoms are returning.
