What is it about?
The Paleogene (between ca 65 and 35 Ma) mafic magmatism in the Southern Alps was associated to a tectonic deformation with ENE-WSW extension direction. This strain direction has been obtained by inversion of fault populations data measured across the graben structure where most of the volcanics accumulated.

Why is it important?
While the are a lot of studies about the petrology and petrography of the Paleogene volcanics of the Southern Alps, studies on the structural setting associated with the rising magmas are rare. This field-based study explains the mechanism of the crustal extension.
