What is it about?
Flash drought is an extreme disaster in which drought condition develops rapidly. But how to identify it remains a confusing qusestion. We develop a new flash drought identification framework that considers it as the subphase of regular drought and examined its performance in the Loess Plateau to extent the understanding of flash drought identification.

Why is it important?
Novel persepctive about flash drought identification by treating it as the subphases of regular drought has been proposed in this paper. The new identification framework has been proved to be effective in capturing flash droughts in terms of time series and spatial patterns. It is flexible as it can receive any indicator representing water avaiablity and adjust parameters for applying in different climate zone.
