What is it about?

The focus of our study is the large number of phaeodarians among the >1 mm sinking particles, which have traditionally been excluded when estimating sinking particle fluxes. Our study revealed that >1 mm sinking particles exported substantial amount of particulate organic carbon in the western North Pacific and that one of the major carriers in the mesopelagic zone was Phaeodaria.

Why is it important?

Previous studies estimated phaeodarian carbon contents from the biovolumes and existing conversion factor. However, there have been actually no direct measurements of carbon contents in phaeodarians, unless our present study.

Perspectives

Our simple dissection method and direct measurement of the organic carbon content in phaeodarians will be an important step to elucidate the global contribution of phaeodarians to the biological carbon pump.
