What is it about?

In this study, we identified three types of multiple jobholders based on quantitative and qualitative data: the contented partly self-employed, the self-actualizer and the involuntary multiple jobholder. The types differed regarding their reasons for and their satisfaction with multiple jobholding and their combination of employment relationships. Overall, the multiple jobholders reported a low level of burnout and a high level of self-esteem. It can be concluded that multiple jobholding allows workers to compensate burdening jobs with other employment relationships.

Why is it important?

This is one of the few studies that investigate employment relationships of multiple jobholders and their health and self-esteem in detail. It provides evidence for very diverse reasons for and consequences of multiple jobholding.

Perspectives

I hope that this research inspires other researchers for exploring non-standard employment relationships and how people are affected by these.
