What is it about?

Antimicrobial peptides are clue molecules for the innate immunity in humans. Elderly individuals are prone to develop infectious disease and in many cases infections gets complicated. We use Vitamin D and L-isoleucine to induce this peptides in cells from elderly individuals.

Why is it important?

We found that Vitamin D induces antimicrobial peptides in the cells of elderly individuals, which suggest the use of this components as prophylactic in these individuals.

Perspectives

The use of vitamin D most be test it in clinical trials to evaluate whether the constant use of this vitamin decreases recurrent infection in this population
