What is it about?

Chlorophyll content determination is important in drinking water management. To extract chlorophyll from algae, methanol is routinely used in algology laboratories but considering that it is poisonous, ethanol has been suggested in water management practice.

Why is it important?

In this work, the extraction efficiency with ethanol was tested and compared to that of methanolic extraction. The main result was that the routine procedure should be detailly standardized otherwise the extraction efficiency can be very poor (around 50 % only).

Perspectives

Despite the poisonous property of methanol, we suggest using it under laboratory conditions where all safety conditions are set.
