What is it about?
A report on Nicotiana africana protoplast isolated from cell suspension culture and plant regeneration.Plant protoplast are cells without cell walls and they can regenerate in vitro to whole plants. We were able to demonstrate regeneration from cell suspension protoplast in a new tobacco species Nicotiana africana.

Why is it important?
Protoplast culture and plant regeneration is important to transfer resistance traits, like resistance to potato virus Y (PVY) by fusing protoplast of two different species, into cultivated species like N. tobacco or potato (this was not successful because of difficulties in regenerating fusion products between the two genus). It is also important to use protoplast for gene transfer or today for genome editing with CRISPR-Cas technology.
