What is it about?

Using CVD any one can synthesize, 1-D carbon nanotubes integrated on 2-D graphene substrates to yield 3D G-CNT ensembles.. but my aim was to develop a simple microwave based technique to synthesize 3D G-CNT..

Why is it important?

When I was a kid, there was an ad on TV about Mahatma Gandhi.. which had a beautiful line: "The greatness of this man lies in his simplicity". My aim was a simple microwave based technique which will reduce both capital costs and processing times.

Perspectives

I was trying to synthesize Pd decorated graphene and was following the synthesis technique reported by Scheuermann et. al.'s paper DOI: 10.1021/ja901105a [yet another great paper from R. Mulhaupt's lab]. I was trying to accelerate the rate of reaction by using microwave.. but when I tested my samples in SEM, instead of G-Pd, I observed G-CNT-Pd.. and as they say the rest is history.. Even better results can be obtained by using Fe, Co, Ni catalysts.. And if you think that ionic liquids are expensive, drop me a mail.. I now have about 2 dozen chemicals which can yield CNTs on graphene at fraction of the cost of ionic liquids.
