What is it about?

Growth of mussels can be impaired by presence of crude oil. Thousands of alkyl aromatic compounds, as a complex mixture, are implicated in toxicity of crude oil to mussels. Numerous examples of compounds identified using state-of-the-art GCxGC-ToF-MS instrumentation.

Why is it important?

Identification of novel petroleum compounds that may be toxic to mussels means that they can be more routinely monitored. Mussel health is important for their wellbeing and may impact the quality and safety of commercially farmed mussels.

Perspectives

Co-authors let us use their first-in-country GCxGC-ToF-MS to examine mussels extracts. This instrument was a game changer for enabling the separation and identification of petroeum complex mixtures.
