What is it about?
At room temperature using Pd/TiO2 under LED light, dehydrogenation of 1° amines followed by amine–imine exchange and subsequent hydrogenation of the imines gives 2° amines. hetero-coupling of different amines (using light) and amine–amine coupling (using light) followed by alkylation with alcohols (using light) in one-pot operation became also possible.

Why is it important?
Only byproduces ammonia. Applicability for one-pot pharmaceutical synthesis of a drug used for irritable bowel syndrome, Alverine, was demonstrated by a photocatalytic reaction sequence of self-condensation of an amine followed by N-alkylation of the resulting secondary amine with an alcohol.
