What is it about?
The study of polystyrene latex particles near a solid surface using a quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation has identified that particles can be repelled from a like charged interface so that a layer of water separates the dispersion from the interface. The separation can be altered by screening the electrostatic repulsion by adding salt to the dispersion.

Why is it important?
Separation of the bulk dispersion from an interface can be important for rheological behaviour and may strongly influence wall slip. The model of repulsion of particles from an interface can explain anomalous results from the quartz crystal microbalance with increases in frequency rather than the usual decrease in frequency as material is bound to a surface.
