What is it about?
Five new solid forms of the antibacterial nitrofurantoin are being used to improve thermodynamic solubility, release, permeability and photostability. The use of TDDFT and Molecular Electrostatic Potential (MEP) explains the molecular reasons for the improvement in physicochemical properties

Why is it important?
This is important because cocrystal scientists typically focus on improving release and dissolution rates. In this work, a wide range of physicochemical properties has been studied, among which an increase in the permeability through a biological membrane is shown, which very rarely occurs for cocrystal systems.
