What is it about?

In industrial cell culture used to make drugs, the food used to keep the cells alive and healthy (cell culture media) is a very important factor which determines how well the processes work. Measuring changes in the media is normally very expensive or time consuming. Here we developed a very quick inexpensive measurement and analysis method based on optical spectroscopy and mathematical data analysis. This allowed us to predict which media were good or bad (i.e. which tasted better to the cells) before staring the process.

Why is it important?

This is important because it demonstrated that we could predict the final yield of a biopharma process by measuring and analyzing the variation in the cell culture media.

Perspectives

This paper was the major output of nearly six years of hard work by my team and Ialong with our collaborators in Bristol Myers Squibb and generated a lot of follow on activity with the industrial biotechnology community.
