What is it about?
Serine hydromethyltransferase (SHMT) has a crucial role in the folate pathway. We have shown for the first time that this enzyme is a valid target to treat Malaria. A new class of highly potent inhibitors based on a pyrazolopyran scaffold is described.

Why is it important?
Resistance against existing drugs to treat Malaria is a major concern to date. For this reason new valid target are urgently needed. Inhibition of SHMT is highly promising in that respect.
