What is it about?

We analyze the efficiency of organic pasture farming in Germany using data from 1994/95 to 2005/06. Five inputs and one output are analyzed by means of a stochastic frontier production function and we investigate factors that drive efficiency. The results are reflect on the background of knowledge and regional heterogeneity.

Why is it important?

We directly link our efficiency results to regional clusters of organic farming. We find that especially the farm-clusters in southern Germany are highly efficient, whereas the northern and eastern clusters are less efficient. We also investigate the efficiency during the conversion period and we find that farm-efficiency increases five years after the conversion to organic farming.

Perspectives

This is probably the publication, where I spent the longest in order to learn diverse methods and to finally create the results, which are now published.
