Why is it important?

This is the first such study that describes the long term trends in the occurance of dengue in the English Caribbean - a popular tourist destination for Europe and Americas where dengue is non-existent. This study clearly shows the increasing occurrence of dengue, more frequent and more severe epidemics of dengue, its seasonality and the population most affected. Furthermore, this study shows gross under reporting of data on Dengue to PAHO and resulting inadequacy of such data collected by WHO/PAHO.

Perspectives

I think for a country that is so dependent on tourism, it is very important to monitor occurrence of emerging infectious diseases such as dengue and to monitor its trend. These are essential for timely action to combat the public health problems and the economic consequences posed by these epidemic diseases.
