What is it about?

Why is it important?

The paper proposes that a new [t] with the low VOT values is emerging in Malaysian English. Due to the inclusion of this new sound in the sound inventory, the order of [p] and the original alveolar [t] is reversed. Another important point is that the new [t] arises phonemically, indicating that some non-linguistic factors are playing a part. This sound lends support to the process of nativization but it also weakens it because of its irregular occurrences.
