Why is it important?
The controversy was such at the NATO summit that took place in 1957, that the North Atlantic alliance refrained from meetings at the highest level for decades to come. This paper is based on archival evidence from a number of countries and it shows a nuanced understanding of US, UK as well continental European political perspectives.
