How foreign public opinion affects U.S. foreign policy

What is it about?

When the U.S. seeks cooperation from countries around the world, do the views of their publics about the U.S. affect foreign policy? This research uses multinational surveys to find a conditional effect of public opinion about U.S. foreign policy on their policies towards the U.S..

Why is it important?

The effect of U.S. foreign policy in foreign countries is conditional on the importance of the issue itself for mass publics. Furthermore, foreign public opinion about the U.S. also appears to affect political decisions relating to the International Criminal Court and U.N. General Assembly.
