I review Azfar Moin's 2012 book, The Millennial Sovereign: Sacred Kingship and Sainthood in Islam. I summarize the book's contents and draw out its major contributions to thinking about religious aspects of Islamic kingship, drawing on a diversity of historical sources, and comparing Mughal India with Safavid Iran.
