What is it about?

Comparatives analyses of sedimentation and palaeobotanical patterns of various basins in Europe have revealed the effects of climate and landscape change on the evolution of the "coal swamps" of Variscan Europe during Pennsylvanian (late Carboniferous) times.

Why is it important?

The "coal swamps" were a major carbon sink during Pennsylvanian times and the changes in these habitats had a major effect on the atmosphere and climate of the times. Especially during late Bashkirian and Moscovian times, Variscan Europe had one of the largest areas of "coal swamps" and coincided with a significant interval of global climatic cooling and growth of the polar Gondwana ice-sheet.
